Obesity and Overweight are increasingly most common conditions in the World. They are caused by the increase in the size and the amount of fat cells that accumulate in the body.

Causes of Obesity

Energy imbalances cause the body to store fat

Energy imbalances cause overweight and obesity. An energy imbalance means that your energy IN side of your body is not equal your energy OUT. This energy you measured in calories. Energy IN is the number of calories that you can also get from food and drinks. Energy OUT is the number of calories that your body uses for processes such as breathing, digesting, also for being physically active, and regulating body temperature.

The body has three types of fat tissue such as white, brown, and beige. That it uses to fuel itself, regulate its temperature in response to cold and hot, and store energy for the purpose of future use.

Medical conditions

Some genetic disorders and endocrine disorders can cause overweight or obesity.

Genetic syndromes

Several genetic syndromes are associated with overweight and obesity, Such as

  • Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Bardet-Biedl syndrome
  • Alström syndrome
  • Cohen syndrome

Endocrine disorders

such as the endocrine system produces hormones that help maintain energy balances in the body. the following endocrine disorders or tumor affecting the endocrine system and cause overweight and obesity.

Hypothyroidism. With this condition People have low levels of thyroid hormones. These low levels are also associated with decreased metabolism and weight gain, even when food intake is reduced. People with hypothyroidism also produce less body heat. Have a lower body temperature. And do not efficiently use stored fat for energy.

Cushing’s syndrome. People with this disease have high levels of glucocorticoids, such as cortisol in the blood. High cortisol levels make the body feel like it is under chronic stress. As a result, people have an increase in appetite and the body will also store more fat. Cushing’s syndrome may also develop after taking certain medicines.

Tumors. Some tumors, such as craniopharyngioma, can cause severe obesity because the tumors develop near parts of the brain that perform the function of hunger control.

Medicines such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, antiepileptics, and antihyperglycemics can also cause weight gain and lead to overweight and obesity.

Obesity prevention for kids

Obesity prevention can begin at a young age. It’s important to help young people to maintain a healthy weight without focusing on the scale.

Breastfeed infants, when possible

Feed growing children appropriate portion sizes

The American Academy of Pediatrics tells that toddlers don’t require huge amounts of food. From ages 1 to 3, every inch of height should roughly 40 calories of food intake.

Build early relationships with healthy foods

Encourage to your child that try a variety of different fruits, vegetables, and proteins from an early age. As they grow up, they may be more likely to incorporate these healthy foods into their own diet.

Eat healthy foods as a family

Changing eating habits as a family allows. This will make it easier for children to continue following good eating habits as they grow into adults.

Encourage eating slowly and only when hungry

Overeating can happen when you’re not hungry and you eat. This excess fuel eventually becomes stored in the body as fat and can lead to obesity. Encourage your child to eat only when they feel hungry and to chew their food more slowly for better digestion.

Obesity prevention for adults

Many of these obesity prevention tips are the same that you use for losing or maintaining a healthy weight. Eating a healthy diet and getting more physical activity can also help prevent obesity.

Consume less “bad” fat and more “good” fat

Intake of healthy dietary fats, such as polyunsaturated fats, can improve your cholesterol levels and reduce obesity risk.

Consume less processed and sugary foods

 Processed and ultra-processed foods is linked to a high risk of obesity. Many processed foods are high in fat, salt, and sugar, which can encourage overeating and cause of obesity.

Eat more servings of vegetables and fruits

The daily recommendation for fruit and vegetable intake is six to nine servings per day for adults. Filling your plate with vegetables and fruit can help keep calories reasonable and reduce the risk of overeating.

Eat plenty of dietary fiber

Focus on eating low–glycemic index foods

The glycemic index (GI) is a scale used to measure how quickly a food item will raise your blood sugar level. Focusing on low-GI foods can help keep blood sugar levels normal. Keeping your blood glucose levels steady can also help with weight management.

Social support isn’t just for children and teens — it’s important for adults to feel supported. Whether cooking with family or going on walks with friends, getting people involved can also help to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
