Supraventricular tachycardia(SVT): Symptoms, Causes and its Diagnosis

supraventricular tachycardia
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), is defined as an abnormally fast heartbeat from 140 to 225 beats per minutes. also known as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, heart rhythm problems (heart arrhythmias) that originate above the ventricles (supraventricular) in the atria or in the AV node also cause by SVT.

Normally heart beat is 60 to 100 beats per minute. If heart rate is more than 100 beats per minute it is called tachycardia). This start when the electrical impulses that coordinate your heartbeats do not work properly. you may feel it like a fluttering or racing heart.

Many people with rare episodes of supraventricular tachycardia also live healthy without any restrictions or interventions. For others patients, treatment and lifestyle changes also control or eliminate rapid heartbeats.

Symptoms of Supraventricular tachycardia

Supraventricular tachycardia may come and go away suddenly. Symptoms also last from a few minutes to a few hours and days, and some people have no symptoms at all. Supraventricular tachycardia becomes a problem when it occurs more times and is ongoing, particularly if you have heart damage or other coexisting medical problems.

Signs and symptoms of SVT are such as:

  • A fluttering in your chest
  • Rapid heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Sweating
  • A pounding sensation in the neck
  • Fainting (syncope) or near fainting

Signs and symptoms may be difficult to identify in infants and very young children, Sweating, poor feeding, pale skin and also infants with a heart rate greater than 200 beats per minute also have supraventricular tachycardia.

Supraventricular tachycardia is not life-threatening

Supraventricular tachycardia is not life-threatening . but you should talk to your doctor if you experiencing such symptoms.

  • shortness of breath
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • lightheadedness
  • fainting or near fainting, also can be related to a serious health condition

Such as

  • psychological stress,
  • lack of sleep and also physical activity.
  • Heart failure
  • Thyroid disease
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Smoking
  • Also Drinking too much alcohol
  • Consuming too much caffeine
  • Drug use, such as cocaine and methamphetamines
  • Certain medications, such as asthma medications and cold and allergy drugs
  • Surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain health conditions, such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome

Types of supraventricular tachycardia

There are also three major types of supraventricular tachycardia:

Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT)

  • It tends to occur more often in young women.  most common type in both males and females of any age.

Atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia (AVRT)

  • AVRT is the most-common type of supraventricular tachycardia. It’s most commonly diagnosed in younger people.

Atrial tachycardia

  • People with coexisting heart disease. more commonly diagnosed with Atrial tachycardia.

Other types of supraventricular tachycardia are such as:

  • Sinus tachycardia
  • Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST)
  • Multifocal atrial tachycardia (MAT)
  • Junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET)
  • Nonparoxysmal junctional tachycardia (NPJT)

Risk factors

Risk factors of supraventricular tachycardia also include:

  • Age
  • Coronary artery disease
  • other heart problems
  • previous heart surgery
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Thyroid problems
  • Drugs and supplements
  • Anxiety or emotional stress
  • Physical fatigue
  • Diabetes

•        Electrocardiogram ECG

An ECG test is used to measures the time and also duration of each electrical phase in your heartbeat.

•        Holter monitor

This is a portable ECG device can also be worn for a day or more to record your heart’s activity.

•        Event monitor

Attaching portable ECG device to your body and pressing a button when you have symptoms. Doctor can check your heart rhythm at the time of your symptoms.

•        Echocardiogram

In this noninvasive test, a transducer placed on your chest. It produces images of heart’s size, structure and also motion.

•        Stress test

For some people, supraventricular tachycardia is also worsened by stress or exercise. During a stress test, you use a treadmill or stationary bicycle and your heart activity is monitored.

  • Heart failure
  • unconsciousness
  • cardiac arrest.
