Ultrasound

An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to show the inside of the body.

Ultrasounds can produce images of infants and baby in real time, 

What are some common uses?

  • The most common use of ultrasound is to monitor pregnant women unborn babies;
  • Ultrasound uses in diagnosis and during certain procedures for guiding surgeons.

How does it work?

  • The ultrasound machine has a probe, which emits high-frequency sound waves.
  • Ultrasound reached different parts of the body, creating echoes, and when these bounces back to the probe, it can also detect them.
  • Ultrasound can create a live image. It can perform externally, internally or endoscopically.

What are any advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages

Usually there are no side effects of ultrasound scans. ultrasound

Normal activity can resume straight after completion the scan.

The results we can see in real time, so there is no need to wait.

Disadvantages

  • Endoscopic ultrasounds can cause a sore throat or in extreme cases, internal bleeding.

X-Rays

What is an X-Ray?

An x-ray is a common procedure to get images of inside of the body. It uses radiation.

What do they produce images of?

They use to produce images of bones, usually to see what they are breaks. Dentists use it to look at teeth.

What are some common uses?

Surgeons Use it to get guide for operations.

To detect broken bones, and to diagnosis the best course of treatment for this.

How does it work?

  • X-rays, are a type of electromagnetic radiation not visible to humans, pass through the body.
  • The energy is absorbed by different parts of the body at different rates.
  • A detector on the other side of the person is use to see how much energy was absorbed, and will be able to generate an image from this.
  • Denser parts of the body, like bone, show up as white, as few x-rays could pass through.
  • In some cases, a contrast agent is given to the patient for soft tissues to be seen more easily on the image.
  • The x-rays are very fast, and the whole procedure should only take a few minutes.

What are any advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages

  • The x ray machine not surround the whole body, that is why not cause anxiety in people with claustrophobia.
  • The procedure only takes a few minutes.

Disadvantages

  • Sometime contrast agents may cause side effects.
  • Long X-rays exposure to the patient to unwanted radiation, which could potentially cause cancer,
  • The amount of radiation given off is minimal.
